Activities of the Months Past (June - August 2009)
MPDA has been very active in the last few months. Not only did we have three medical talks within a period of 2 months, but we also had an array of activities happening within and outside the Parkinson Center. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all concerned who have contributed towards the awareness of Parkinson's Disease and helped the cause of our association in one way or another. Here is a report of these activities.
24th June 2009 - Cheque Presentation of RM10,000-00 from Selangor State Government
At the World Parkinson's Day celebration which was held on 11th April 2009 in the garden at the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) headquarters, the special guest of honour who graced the occasion, YB Dr.Xavier Jayakumar, chairman of the Permanent Committee for Health, Plantation Workers & Poverty, and Caring Government in Selangor, pledged a sum of RM10,000 to MPDA.
The pledge was made good, when Sara and Sivaraman were invited to attend a cheque presentation held at a hotel in Petaling Jaya on 24th June 2009. The ceremony was also held in conjunction with the cheque presentation of RM4m by the Selangor Government to Tamil Schools in Selangor.
We are grateful for this kind gesture and thank YB Dr. Xavier for the contributions.
4th July 2009 - Monthly Meeting on Chiropractic Management for People with Parkinson's
Most of the time we have had talks on topics related to Parkinson's Disease. We had therefore diverged a little this time and invited a chiropractor to address our members. That was how Dr. Choo Kuan Wei ended up in giving us a very interesting talk in chiropractic on the 4th of July. Dr. Choo gave us an overall view on chiropractic and explained that many bodily aches and pains and physical distortion were actually due to displacement of our bones and muscles. These aches and pains could actually be cured without surgery by careful external manipulation of the bones and muscles. Dr. Choo also explained how chiropractic treatment was applied in sports injury, trigger point therapy, posture biomechanics, carpel tunnel syndrome and pediatrics. He also explained how and why certain posture adjustment can relieve some aches and pains.
There were many questions from our members as Chiropractic Therapy is not very widely known in Malaysia.
6th July 2009 - Invitation by Naza Group to its Ground Breaking Ceremony
The Naza Group of Companies unveiled its 50-storey office tower, Naza Tower located in Jalan Stonor in Kuala Lumpur City Centre on Tuesday, 6th July 2009. Sara and Sivaraman attended the ground breaking ceremony which was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak. It is heartening to note that on a grand ceremony like this, the Naza Group of Companies which is helmed by the Naza Group chairman SM Nasarudin SM Nasimudin, had not forgotten to invite charitable organizations to the ceremony. Other invitees were corporate figures, dignitaries, companies, staff etc. The tower will become the group's new headquarters once it is completed in 2013, and is described as a "green building" and environmentally friendly.
12th July 2008 - NAZA TTDI Charity Golf 2008 Cheque Presentation
Since the 2003, Naza TTDI Sdn Bhd (TTDI) has been raising funds for charitable organizations through its annual golf tournaments. The donations were raised through its business partners and associates of the Naza Group of companies.
15th July 2009 : Donation from Yoong Yoong Benevolent Association
Our above benefactor celebrated its 60th Anniversary at Hee Loi Ton (Pudu) Restaurant in Shaw Parade, Kuala Lumpur on 15th July 2009. To commemorate the event, a total of 10 charitable organizations were named beneficiaries to their donation of RM1,500 each. The occasion was attended by their members and their families. Sara Lew represented MPDA in receiving the cheque on behalf of MPDA.
Thank you very much to Yoong Yoong Benevolent Association for your support towards our association.
01 August 09 - Monthly Meeting on Functional Neurosurgery on PD
He is hailed from the Queen's Hospital, London. He is none other than Dr. Ian Low Hu Lian, Consultant Functional Neurosurgeon who gave an interesting talk on functional neurosurgery on Parkinson's disease during his short stay in Malaysia.
He talked about deep brain stimulation (DBS), and its selection criteria, together with an overview of results worldwide. He also shared his personal experience doing DBS at the Queen's Hospital in London, and showed footages on some of the pre- and post DBS results that he had done.
It was indeed a very informative talk, and some of us didn't know prior to the talk, that DBS could be done on movement disorders other than Parkinson's disease. In this respect, Dr. Ian also gave brief details of some of the surgeries done on other movement disorder cases.
The talk was made possible because of the kind gesture of MAHSA UNIVERSITY COLLEGE who had graciously allowed us complimentary use of one of their lecture halls for the talk. Besides that, their staff from the administration/PR department were there before and during the talk to ensure that everything went off smoothly. For that, we would like to extend our appreciation to them for their support.
To Dr. Ian Low, "Terima Kasih" for the very good talk that you had given us that day.
6th August 2009 - Lights, Camera, Action! (2)
RTM2 will be featuring a musical serial called " RTM2 IDOLA MUZIC AKTIF. The lead singer, Cik Zur Eda has picked our association as the charitable organization which she would be dedicating her segment to. As a prelude to her performance, she visited our Centre on 6th August with a recording crew from A4 Communications Sdn. Bhd. to capture footages of our activities in Parkinson Center.
Since Zur Eda is a singer, we decided to arrange for a group therapy in vocal exercises that morning. Our members were supportive and excited with her participation in the session. The highlight of the session was when she dedicated a lovely song to all our members and their caregivers who were present there that morning. She has such a lovely and amiable personality, that you couldn't help but enjoy her presence.
Watch out for the announcement when our own "Stars" will appear on TV!!
2nd August 2009 - Monthly Meeting on Current Treatment Approaches in PD
Our new Medical Advisor, Dr. Lim Shen Yang, Consultant Neurologist and Senior Lecturer of UMMC/UM made his debut at the talk held in Pantai Medical Center, Bangsar on 2nd August 2009. The talk was well-attended by our members, their caregivers and supporters.
Dr. Lim began his talk with an introduction on the basics in PD, before progressing to the major challenges in Parkinson's Disease, such as, Motor Response complications, Dopa-unresponsive features, non-motor symptoms of PD, the criteria and effects of DBS, the spectrum of levadop-related fluctuations, etc.
The response from the members was very positive, and the talk lasted longer than usual with lots of queries from members. We welcome Dr. Lim on board, and look forward to his continuous support towards our association.
