I HAVE been a Parkinson's patient for the last eight years or so. After a recent stroke, the tremors on my left hand is now more pronounced. I have been treated at Universiti Hospital for the last four years.
I am a member of the local Parkinson's Club and am fairly well informed about the disease. In trying to live a better life, I have tried many of the so-called alternative treatment offered by various parties but to date have not found any suitable solution.
Last week, while having breakfast at a restaurant with my wife, a lady approached us and introduced herself. She stated that she noticed that I was having tremors and asked if we had heard of a popular brand of products.
She then said she had just the product that would cure my problem within weeks and requested permission to visit us at home to discuss this product.
The lady and her husband came to the house and very confidently said that my condition can be cured in about two months. They then proceeded to fill in a questionnaire and came up with a list of 10 products which I should consume.
They also came up with a similar list for my wife who has diabetes. I reconfirmed with them that I had Parkinson's and if their "prescription" would be effective.
To convince us the man proceeded to phone his "master" in Penang and told him to speak to me. The "master" informed me that the couples' "prescription" was correct for my condition and I could safely proceed with the products.
I again stressed the point that I was having Parkinson's and whether he was sure of the benefits. He stressed that he has helped many Alzheimer patients. When I reminded him that I had Parkinson's, he very confidently stated that Alzheimer was another name for Parkinson's!
I do go for regular medical check ups. All my results are within limits. However from the questionnaire, the agent prescribed about 10 of their products, each costing about RM150, for a 90-day treatment.
On looking at their "prescription" all the products were common vitamins, minerals and herbal products. On what basis did they discover my "acute" vitamin deficiency?
The couple still insisted that their product is effective. They proposed a package for 90 days costing around RM1,000 per month and assured me that I would definitely see improvements.
I counter proposed that if they actually believed and had confidence in their products and their effectiveness, I would take a supply for six months and pay double the amount after I see the improvement in myself.
If it works, I would continue to use the products. I also reminded them that our local Parkinson's Association had about 400 members and many of them were potential customers. They then left saying that they could not do business that way. They were more interested in us becoming agents tocon other unfortunate people into buying common vitamins and minerals at exorbitant prices.
I beg these salesmen from multi-level marketing firms to cease this practice. Patients are already at their wits' end trying to lead a meaningful life in spite of their disease
Please spare these patients from incurring unnecessary expenditure in their quest for better health.
