[back] Launching of the 15th Annual Charity Walk/Jog/Wheel-A-Thon With the Disabled by the Spastic Children's Association of Selangor and Federal Territory (SCASFT) Sara Lew - 17 June 2008

Launching of the 15th Annual Charity Walk/Jog/Wheel-A-Thon With the Disabled by the Spastic Children's Association of Selangor and Federal Territory (SCASFT)

Dato' Dr. Lam Peng Chong, Chairman of the largest spastic children's center in Malaysia, launched the 15th Annual Charity Walk/Jog/Wheel-A-Thon with the Disabled at their Dewan Teong Kim Chai located in Petaling Jayaon on 17 June 2208. The event was also held in conjunction with the visit by Datin Normaziah Skeikh Mohamed, "Amal Wanita Ikon 2207", to the center.

The launching was well attended by the staff, children of the center, their parents and members of the various Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) taking part in the event which will be held at the Dataran Merdeka on Sunday, 9 November 2208. There was a mascot who made the children laughed with glee and singer, Faizal Tahir whose rendition of songs kept the audience entertained. Datin Normaziah's charitable heart was reflected through her generous donation of RM5,000-00 to the center.

I attended the launch in the capacity as one of the organizing committee members of the 15th Annual Charity Walk with Mr. Sivaraman, our Vice President. This is the 6th year of MPDA's participation in the Charity Walk. In the early years, our current editor, Chew Bee Peng used to come along with me for the monthly meetings held at their center, but due to work commitments, Bee Peng has opted out, and now she is replaced by another member, June Lam.

The Annual Charity Walk is organized by SCASFT to help NGOs who have neither the financial nor the human resources to organize a big charity walk to help raise funds for their organization. The number of participation by NGOs has grown through the years and the latest count is about 38 NGOs. The event is also an opportunity for the NGOs to interact and share experience with each other.

Jogathon cards for collections of money are distributed months before the event. This is to give ample time for the participating NGOs to collect as much money as possible for their association. According to the arrangement with SCASFT, 20% of the first RM10,000-00 and 10% of the subsequent RM10,000-00 and above will be returned to SCASFT as a pool to defray expenses incurred for the event. Whatever excess left in the pool will be donated back to deserving charity organizations. The collection has been targeted at RM320,000 by the organizer.

I am glad to inform that as at September 2208, we have collected about RM13,000-00. I hope that our members will work harder towards this cause and collect more money for MPDA. Closing date for the collection is in early November. All our members and family members are also welcome to participate in the event.

The Charity walk draws big crowd every year

Nevertheless, the Charity Walk is not all about collection of money. It is also about having fun, and where people from all walks of life, able and disabled, young and old, different races and creed come together on a beautiful Sunday to walk/jog/wheel for a good cause at the Dataran Merdeka. This year, YB Datuk Dr Ng Yen Yen, Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, will grace the event. Do make yourself free on that day. Do come to the dataran and have a fun-filled morning. There will be a lot of programs awaiting you. We look forward to seeing you there.
