Message from the President - August 2011
Greetings to all! It is great to be back again. After almost a year's hiatus, I am glad to inform that the publication of our newsletter, the Berita Parkinson is back in circulation again. The reason for the halt in circulation was due to the shortage of manpower following the resignation of our editor, Chew Bee Peng. Bee Peng is unable to contribute her services as she has her own workload as the CEO of a branding company. On behalf of the association, I would like thank her for her contribution towards the association during her tenure as a committee member, and later the editor of the bulletin. Bee Peng remains as our member and contributes her time whenever she can.
Meanwhile, our vice-President, Sivaraman Kannan has agreed to temporarily stand in as the editor. However, we are still looking for volunteers to be in the editorial board. We are really running short of volunteers, and every little help goes a long way for us. Therefore, if anyone of you is interested to be part of the editorial board, please do come forward and lend us a hand. We also welcome articles on Parkinson's Disease. We also need translators to translate articles to Bahasa Malaysia.
I am also pleased to announce that Parkinson's Disease is now recognized by the Welfare Department as one of the diseases that can cause physical disabilities to people with Parkinson's. For our members with Parkinson's, you can now apply for the disability status (subject to the recommendation by your neurologist) from Welfare Department. Amongst the benefits attached to this status are free medication from all Government hospitals, access to disabled car-parks, subsidized public transportation, etc. If you need more information regarding the application and its benefits, please contact us, and we will be glad to be of assistance to you.
I would also like to congratulate our Medical Advisors, Prof. Dr. Norlinah Mohamed Ibrahm and Prof. Dr. Lim Shen-Yang for their promotion to full professorship. Both of them are currently working as consultant neurologists at the UMMC and HUKM respectively.
In addition, Prof. Dr. Lim, Prof. Norlinah and Dr. Santhi Datuk Purvanarajah have written a Parkinson's Disease booklet that provides accurate and up-to-date information about Parkinson's Disease. The booklet is now available free in two languages (English & Chinese), and can be downloaded from our website (www.mpda.org.my). The Malay version will be out soon.
Last November, a new team was elected to hold office in MPDA for the year 2010-2012. I would like to welcome each and everyone on board, and look forward to working together towards the betterment of the association. To the past office-bearers, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your dedication and support towards the association while in office.
To our sponsor, Lord's Tailor, we thank you for your financial support towards the printing of our Berita Parkinson.
To all our members, do keep well and we look forward to your continued support towards the association.
Last but not least, I would like to take this opportunity to greet all our Muslim members, their families, friends and supporters, a "Selamat Hari Raya Aidil Fitri!"
Thank you and best regards,
