Message from the President - September 2009

Dear Members,

MPDA exists because it wants to make a difference to the lives of people with Parkinson's and their families/caregivers. It wants to ensure its voice is heard at all levels of the society, not only by the man on the street but also the regulatory and corporate bodies, allied health professionals, etc. But it is calling out loud enough? The answer is NO, because MPDA does not have sufficient resources to do so. Let me tell you why.

Firstly, MPDA does not have enough volunteers and expertise to help run the show. The major players are the committee members who are mostly people with Parkinson's and caregivers, a paid staff, and a few volunteers. Most of them have been in the position for a long time, and are in dire need of a helping hand or two with their duties. For example, MPDA needs translators for our Berita Parkinson. The editor of its Berita Parkinson, Bee Peng, will love you dearly if you could come forward to help translate articles from English to Bahasa Malaysia and Chinese, and vice versa. You may also want to share some interesting articles or even write one your own on matters pertaining to Parkinson's disease for its Berita Parkinson.

Secondly, and alas! most of the volunteers in MPDA are not too computer savvy . Its webmasters, Wilson Wong and Sau Joe are now far away in Perth, Australia and they are still operating from there for MPDA despite their busy schedule. MPDA wishes to have someone nearer home to assist in this task as well.

Funding is the heartbeat of any organizations and MPDA is no different. Its present annual budget is a very conservative estimate of RM60,000. It does not have any funding whatsoever from the Government because it has yet to be recognized as a disabled organization. How could you help in this respect? To start with, you can get a jogathon card/s from Rose, our administrator, and fill the card/s up by donors and well wishers. Any amount is deeply appreciated.

You see, every year, MPDA participates in the annual jog, walk and wheel-a-thon organized by the Spastic Children's Association of Selangor and KL. This year, it will be held on 9th November at the Dataran Merdeka, its usual venue. Last year, MPDA collected about RM20,000, and it helped sustain us for almost 4 months. Every small sum counts, as little adds up. Therefore, for the sake of MPDA, please reach out and harness the generosity and kindness of relatives / friends / companies ... anyone. And the list that you can help MPDA goes on.

On another note, I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome on board, Dr. Lim Shen Yang as one of our medical advisors. Dr. Lim is currently a Consultant Neurologist and Senior Lecturer at the University of Malaya Medical Center and University of Malaya respectively. He brings with him, a wealth of expertise and experience from his years abroad in Australia and Canada. Dr. Lim holds special interests in Parkinson's Disease, and other movement disorders. Thank you, Dr. Lim for lending us your support and expertise.

I also wish to extend my congratulations to our committee member, Anthony Thanasayan for being re-appointed as a city councilor for the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) for another year. High on his agenda as the Chairman of the Expert Committee on Disability in MBPJ is to advocate for improved and new amenities for the disabled and elderly in Petaling Jaya. Sybas Anthony!. Keep up with the good work. We are really proud of you!

On behalf of MPDA, I would like to wish all our Muslim members, friends and their families, a very blessed and cheerful Hari Raya Aidil Fitri. May you always be happy.

With best regards,

Sara Lew
