FUN IN THE SUN: IN CELEBRATION OF THE WORLD PARKINSON'S DAY 2009
On Saturday, 11th April 2009, MPDA celebrated World Parkinson's Day at the Taman Rusa, MBPJ Headquarters, Jalan Yong Shook Lin, Petaling Jaya. It was a fun-filled outdoor event, attended by almost 150 people with Parkinson's and their family members and supporters. In line with the theme for the day "Bridging the Gap between Patient Advocacy Groups and the Decision Makers", the event was jointly organized with the City Council of Petaling Jaya or Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya (MBPJ). It was also fully sponsored by the City Council.
As early as 8.30 am, members and supporters began to arrive at the park, looking forward to an exciting day ahead. Our Guests of Honor for the event was Mr. Anthony Thanasayan and Tuan Dr. Xaxier Jayakumar a/l Arulanandam, Permanent Chairman of the Tuan Dr. Xavier Jayakumar A/L Arulanandam, Selangor Executive Council Member and Permanent Chairman of the Health, Plantation Workers, Poverty and Caring Government. Tuan Dr. Xavier Jayakumar officiated the event by starting off the Nordic Walking Race participated by people with Parkinson.
The highlights of the event were the handing over of the names list of People with Parkinson's (PwP) who are Petaling Jaya residents to Tuan Dr. Xavier for welfare registration, and the recognition awards to five recipients who are residents of Petaling Jaya. They were Pwp, Mr. Chee Liew Seong, Mr. Tung Kai Seng, Mr. Don Calvin Weekereskera, caregivers Pn. Maimudah Mohd Idris and Mrs. Lloyd Tan Pao Chan nee Yap Yun Kin.
We like to specially thank YB Anthony Thanasayan, City Councilor of Petaling Jaya, and Permanent Chairperson of the Disability Expert Team of MBPJ who gave his support in organizing this event. We also like to thank MBPJ for the sponsorship, its personnel for taking time off from their busy schedules to help us.
Thus ended one of the best World Parkinson's Day that I have been to. I enjoyed the celebration and believe all the other patients did too. On behalf of all the PwP, I would like to thank all the organizers, volunteers, helpers, donors, care Givers and each and everyone who in some way or other helped in making this function a success. As PwP, we are usually slow in starting but when we do get going we sometimes find it difficult to stop in time. This applies in enjoying life too.
